Sartre’s What Is Literature? shifts from the Look to a reciprocity dialectic.
Evidence
In 1948, as Beauvoir was completing Th e Second Sex, Sartre published his well-known essay, What Is Literature? What is particularly striking in this work is the evolution of his thought concerning a privileged intersubjective relationship: that existing between a writer and his reader. Th e latter could well have been depicted in terms of his theory of the “Look,” but he is not. Th e subjectobject duality that had characterized the alienation of human relationships in Being and Nothingness is now replaced by a dialectic of reciprocity. — Christine Daigle, Jacob Golomb (eds.), Beauvoir and Sartre, 281
