Sartre’s play rehearsals inspired Beauvoir to write her only play

Evidence

Beauvoir, for her part, wrote only one play, Les bouches inutiles. It was fi nished in 1944 and fi rst staged in 1945. She says that it was when she attended rehearsals of Sartre’s Les mouches that the idea originated in her to try writing a play herself (see FA, 672). — Christine Daigle, Jacob Golomb (eds.), Beauvoir and Sartre, 56
