Said praised the Subaltern project without citing its actual texts

Evidence

The social context of thus privileging Guha is of considerable interest. There are several references to Subaltern Studies in these essays, but with the exception of a passing reference to Guha’s own brief introductory note in Volume I, Said does not even cite any of the individual texts which constitute this project, let alone give evidence of any detailed engagement with its premisses or products or, especially, with what may signify its difference from – purported superiority over – other kinds of historiography in India. — Aijaz Ahmad, In Theory, 396
