Sacralized racial community requires violence because messianic community is always being remade
Evidence
The sacralizing of race could resort ultimately only to violence to sustain the messianic community. Messianic communities, qua messianic, are always in the making, always in process of becoming. That process of becoming includes converting the qualified non-believing to its vision, and keeping the non-belonging, the non-qualifying, at bay. Race both naturalized the boundaries of membership and licensed the rules of maintenance. The secularizing of race on and in terms of which the New South Africa was to be founded, by contrast, had to reconfigure the sense of community, fashioning an expansive and incorporative national unity. — David Theo Goldberg, The Threat of Race, 1585
