Evidence

Around 1790 a Captain Latorre was trying to survey a road across the highlands from Cartagena into the interior when he came into contact with Negroids, many of whom were descendants of the palenqueros of San Basilio who had not accepted amnesty in 1612 or 1613. All told, the palenqueros from the original settlement of San Basilio had remained completely independent for almost two centuries. — Cedric J.
