Royal protection of subject Muslims was a pillar of Aragonese social stability

Evidence

Since the thirteenth century, when large numbers of Muslims passed under Aragonese rule and so came to enjoy some degree of royal protection, the Aragonese Crown had in various ways come to be a protector of the interests of these Muslims. If the Aragonese Crown were to relinquish that role, the stability of Aragonese society as a whole might be put at risk. As we will see, within five years of the death of Ferdinand, the Muslims had been converted, and society was indeed soon in social turmoil. — L. P. Harvey, Muslims in Spain, 1500 to 1614, 430
