Somewhere in central Australia. The 1950s. A government welfare officer arrives at an Aboriginal camp and removes three children — mixed-race children, “half-caste” in the language of the era — from their mothers. The mothers are not consulted. The children are placed in the back of a truck and driven to a government or church-run institution hundreds of kilometers away. They will not see their mothers again for years. Some will never see them again. This scene was repeated approximately 100,000 times across Australia between approximately 1910 and 1970.
