Rome itself read the Sacromonte texts as a disguised shift toward Islam.
Evidence
Although we do not know for certain how far the creators of the Sacromonte cult planned to go in their takeover nor how fast (because in 1609 the Expulsion overwhelmed them after only fourteen years, and so masked the desired outcome), the direction in which the texts were attempting to shift religious life in Spain—toward Islam—is clear enough. That was the considered view of the authorities at Rome when all further discussion of these texts was banned in 1682. — L. P. Harvey, Muslims in Spain, 1500 to 1614, 1237
