Rockefeller Foundation subsidized Hayek’s networking from his Vienna years onward

Evidence

  1. HPHI, box 73, folder 14. Simons had initially helped Hayek become better acquainted with representatives of the American foundations, such as the Rockefeller Foundation, for helping with the promotion of his international society: “The main purpose of this letter is to pass along a suggestion of my friend William Harrell, Business Manager of the University. He points out that your scheme for intellectual cooperation with German scholars and historiographers—your Acton-Tocqueville Society—is a ‘natural’ for support by the Rockefeller Foundation” (SPRL, Simons to Hayek, July 2, 1945, box 8, folder 9). Rockefeller had been intermittently subsidizing Hayek since his Vienna days at Mises’s business cycle institute. — Philip Mirowski & Dieter Plehwe (eds.), The Road from Mont Pèlerin, 863
