Researchers rarely specify whether typology middle cells are ranked or tied.

Evidence

The next methodological question lies in the middle zone of (1, 0) and (0, 1). If there is a ranking between them then the 2 × 2 typology becomes ordinal. If they are equal then it is partially ordered. In practice, it is not common (in my experience at least) for authors to explicitly address this question. From the discussion one might interpret the typology as ordinal, but rarely is it made explicit. — Gary Goertz, Social Science Concepts and Measurement, 1291

Categorization

  • QUESTION: How much published typology-based quantitative work would change if authors had to declare the middle-cell relation? Probably a big replication literature waiting to happen.
