Replication attempts have largely failed to reproduce Kahan’s most extreme cultural cognition claims
Evidence
Admittedly, I have been one of the leading opponents of Dan Kahan’s cultural or motivated cognition theory (and recent replications have largely failed to reproduce his most extreme claims). We get along great on a personal level at academic retreats; for example, I have fond memories of hiking through the beautiful Swiss mountains together. But as soon as we start talking about work, we firmly disagree. ‘It’s not that people don’t know the evidence,’ Dan would say slightly raising his voice. ‘They do know it, but why would they want to accept a scientific consensus that runs contrary to their political identity?’ — Sander van der Linden, Foolproof, 135
