Religious uniformity policy predated the revolt, making the revolt a pretext
Evidence
Clearly if the Spanish royal family induced the Portuguese to adopt a policy of religious uniformity for Portugal in 1497, then the argument that the enforced conversions of 1500β1502 in Castilian lands came only as a result of the armed revolts in Granada of 1499β1500 and would not otherwise have taken place, is not very convincing. The suspicion must therefore arise that arguments about the revolts having voided the terms of surrender of Granada were mere pretexts. A skeptic might even harbor suspicions that the 1500 revolt in Granada may have been to some extent intentionally provoked (Cisneros and his men were indeed provocative, as we will see). β L. P.
