Religiosity and political dissent, not wealth, will determine Muslim assimilation
Evidence
Similar to the pre-9/11 era, immigrant Muslims will experience segmented assimilation, wherein some will enter the mainstream (i.e., Whiteness) while others will be permanently excluded. Rather than assimilation outcomes arising primarily from high levels of education, income, and wealth (as is the case for most immigrants), levels of religiosity and political dissent will shape the Racial Muslims’ existence. As such, some White-presenting immigrant Muslims will regain their pre-9/11 socially White status, while other immigrant Muslims and all African American Muslims will permanently remain Racial Muslims. — Sahar F. Aziz, The Racial Muslim, 978
Categorization
- QUESTION: Segmented assimilation theory traditionally uses human capital (education, income) as the predictor; Aziz’s substitution of religiosity and political dissent is testable against later census data — worth checking if any empirical work has confirmed this.
- XREF: Segmented assimilation theory connects to the Portes and Zhou sociological work on the second generation, and to the book’s earlier discussion of how religiosity predicts outcomes for other groups.
- corroborated: 2 independent passages support this claim — Sahar F. Aziz, The Racial Muslim: When Racism Quashes…, 978
