Reified subjectivity reduces consciousness to signal registration plus false centrality

Evidence

The former subject no longer thinks, he “is thought,” and his conscious experience, which used to correspond to the concept of reason in middle-class philosophy, becomes little more than a matter of registering signals from zones outside itself, either those that come from within and “below,” as in the drives and bodily and psychic automatisms, or from the outer circles of interlocking social institutions of all kinds. At the same time, the surviving remnant of the ego now falls victim to the illusion of its own continuing centrality: that which no longer is “in itself’ continues to exist “for itself,” and the subject wrongly continues to assume that there exists some correspondence between its inner monadic experience and that purely external network of circumstances (economic, historical, social) which determines and manipulates it through mechanisms beyond the horizon of individual experience. — Fredric Jameson, Marxism and Form, 74
