Racist collectivization denies individuality to colonized groups while sparing whites collective blame

Evidence

The naturalist and progressivist conceptions are alike in viewing as agents those defined as white and those occupying the position of colonizers. For the naturalist, whites and colonizers are considered agents of biological or inherent destiny; for the progressivist, they are agents of history. — David Theo Goldberg, The Racial State, 50 (#corroborates, via linked claim)

Those registered as racially different, as bruised, are lured into Euro-likeness while warned that its inner treasures are almost always beyond their reach. White-likeness is a liking of what’s white, socially induced, a drive to be white-like, but also a grasping in the dark about its idealized experience, for its treasury. That “playing in the dark,” to twist Toni Morrison’s title, and the more or less extreme ambivalence both about what one thus is missing and what it is about one that inevitably makes one miss, if only one could put one’s finger on it, is the sinking sand, the depressing frustrations, of fixating on the unreachable. — David Theo Goldberg, The Threat of Race, 1136 (#expands, via linked claim)

Attribution of sentiments mapped what was “out of character” and “out of place.” Mixed bloods could only be called “too proud” because they expected more than they were granted: better jobs than those given to “natives,” access to the betterpaid and well-pensioned civil service ranks (from which they were barred). They were deemed “self-aggrandizing” because they refused to do manual labor, as we shall see in the next chapter. Creoles could only be called “imperious” in a political system in which they expressed political commitments to issues that mattered less to those Dutch-born Europeans for whom the Indies was but a temporary home. Native women who thought to outfit their mixed blood daughters in European dress to secure their entrance into better schools could be called “duplicitous” and “conniving.” Such attributions both reflected controversies about social hierarchies and consolidated those distinctions. — Ann Laura Stoler, Along the Archival Grain_ Epistemic…, 593 (#complicates, via linked claim)
