Racial formation results from societywide interaction of racial projects across all scales and eras.

Evidence

Racial formation, therefore, is a synthesis, a constantly reiterated outcome, of the interaction of racial projects ona societywide level. These projects are, of course, vastly different in scope and effect. They include largescale public action, state activities, and interpretations of racial conditions in political, artistic, journalistic, or academic fora,2° as well as the seemingly infinite number of racial judgments and practices, conscious and unconscious, that we carry out as part of our individual experience. The concept of racial projects can be understood and applied across historical time to identify patterns in the longue durée of racial formation, both nationally and the entire modern world. At any particular historical moment, one racial project can be hegemonic while others are subservient, marginal, or oppositional to it. — Michael Omi, Howard Winant, Racial Formation in the United States, 130

  • DEFINE: States the core racial formation thesis concisely: a synthesis of interaction among racial projects across macro and micro scales, in longue durée.
  • XREF: This is the definitional root the vault’s existing racial-formation/CRT claims should point back to as their anchor.
