Racial architecture helped fabricate the lived spaces that shape residents’ dispositions

Evidence

Occupation has multiple meanings and racially coded references in play here. First, it signals places of living, the places and spaces people occupy, fill, inhabit. These are occupational spaces – sites or places – that ā€œgiveā€ residents their habits, shape their relations to others, their habitus, their dispositions to their world(s), immediate or more extensively. Such spaces of habituation in turn have been partly fabricated throughout modernity by racial architecture, its form-giving force articulated with other social moldings, within and across the lived conditions, the forms of life, of modern or modernizing societies. — David Theo Goldberg, The Threat of Race, 1846
