Quadraphonic sound failed due to delivery problems and too few speakers.
Evidence
In the 1970s, the quadraphonic set-up was proposed, in which four loudspeakers are positioned evenly around the listener at azimuth angles ±45◦and ±135◦. This layout was never successful because of problems related to content delivery techniques at that time, and because the layout itself has too few loudspeakers to provide good spatial quality in all directions around the listener (Rumsey, 2001). — Ville Pulkki, Matti Karjalainen, Communication Acoustics- An…, 1806
