Quadraphonic forced vinyl playback bandwidth to 50 kHz, improving LP quality

Evidence

Ultimately, four discrete channels were needed. However, achieving this on vinyl LPs required that the recorded bandwidth be extended to about 50 kHz—a challenge. Nevertheless, it was accomplished, as CD-4 from JVC and, although this quadraphonic format was short-lived, the technology necessary to achieve the expanded bandwidth had a lasting benefit on the quality of conventional 2-channel LPs. Among these were half-speed cutting processes, better pressings and playback cartridges with high compliance, low-moving mass and new stylus shapes combined to yield wider bandwidth and reduced tracing and tracking distortions. — Toole, Floyd E, Sound reproduction- the acoustics and…, 756
