Puntlandâs stability collapsed over Yusufâs contested term extension
Evidence
Inaugurated in Awsa in Ethiopia, with the energetic participation of the Puntland leader âAbdillahi Yusuf, this new Somali political Council proposed to hold a grand reconciliation conference inside Somalia and urged âAbdulqassim to participate on an equal footing and not as leader of a âgovernmentâ which the warlords did not recognize. ⊠Events in Puntland were moving less smoothly. After a promising start, âAbdillahi Yusufâs official term in office had expired in June. His request for a two-year extension met with strong opposition, particularly from a rival connected with the T.N.G., and this disagreement soon degenerated into public disorder and fighting between the contending parties. â I.M.
