Private disaster charity replaced shrinking public welfare support

Evidence

It is revealing that a large effort of private giving to hurricane relief has been heralded in contrast to the relatively forlorn and begrudging public revenues enabled, amidst handwringing about having to slow down extending existing tax cuts and rendering permanent the ending of the estate tax. The Bush administration has gone about more or less systematically deva-stating its public welfare activities to the point of constricting its support for the most vulnerable populations in the country. — David Theo Goldberg, The Threat of Race, 437
