Pride tracks intergroup status while respect measures one’s standing inside the group

Evidence

Pride reflects the individual’s evaluation of the status of his or her group relative to other groups (Mael & Ashforth, 1992; Hogg & Terry, 2000), while respect reflects the individual’s evaluation of his or her own status within the group (Doosje, Ellemers, & Spears, 1995). Thus, pride concerns status between one’s in-group and out-group, and respect pertains to the individual’s intragroup status. — Roderick M. Kramer, Geoffrey J. Leonardelli, Robert W.
