Pre-distortion compensation failed because tracing distortion varies with stylus shape
Evidence
RCA “Dynagroove” LPs were pre-distorted in an attempt to cancel tracing distortion, but that distortion is different for styli of different shapes, so results varied. If that were all that was done, it might have had some positive effect, but the process also added bass at low levels, treble at higher levels and made dynamic range modifications intended to “improve the listening experience”. It met with mixed reviews and was generally not attractive to purists. — Toole, Floyd E, Sound reproduction- the acoustics and…, 154
