Poverty mediates radicalization chiefly by blocking access to mental health care
Evidence
Financial Challenges Twenty-two cases (19 white supremacists and three Islamic extremists) described financial hardship in some way. Six focal individuals described financial hardship as part of their life experiences but did not make explicit links between this and radicalization or deradicalization. However, seven cases did make this explicit link. For one former Islamic extremist, poverty meant that her parents could not afford to pay for her therapy when, as a child, she struggled with isolation and being bullied: “When I was young, none of that was available because my parents didn’t have money, I didn’t have money, and they didn’t believe in that stuff because they weren’t educated… . If I had the role models and the supervision, like the good kind, I would have seen a therapist or a counselor about the bullying and then how that isolated me, you know.” — Ryan Andrew Brown, Todd C.
