Post-independence African philosophy stressed mental liberation as much as political freedom

Evidence

This Nationalist-Ideological philosophy advocated both a physical and “mental liberation and a return to African humanism.” The principle of African humanism was advanced by Kaunda and lies within the same ideological realm as the concept of Ubuntu. Nkrumah coined the principle of consciencism as a philosophy of the African revolution which upholds the ideology of socialism and the redemption of African humanist society of the past. — Frans Dokman, Beyond Bantu Philosophy_…, 952
