Positing an inner referent makes interiority ineffable and merely intended
Evidence
This state of absolute transparency is the paradoxical result of a phantasm of opacity. Following the logic of this immediate ātransformation into signā, the interior becomes something āinvisibleā which, although expressed by the organs, remains ineffable, non-existent, and merely intended. Given an interiority posited as referent, the phantasm of opacity must follow. This conception of the sort of expression generated by the referential illusion is precisely what Hegel understands as the negative of language, language, or a part of it, having come on the scene concurrently. In fact, the āindividual characteristic of speechā, i.e. immediate physical expressiveness, precedes language itself as a consequence preceding its premisses. ā Catherine Malabou, The Future of Hegel, 555

- QUESTION: Worth chasing: how does āimmediate physical expressiveness precedes languageā cash out against later theorists of the body as language? The consequence-before-premise inversion is a curious dialectical claim.
