Populist nativism drives concrete denial of Muslim futures across societies
Evidence
For every little Mohamed I locked eyes with, there were tens of young Muslims I spoke to whose dreams had been deferred and futures denied by the shadow of Islamophobia looming over them. For every Kalsoum I held hands with as I closed my eyes, praying that hers would reopen to beloved faces not seen in years, there were scores of mothers and fathers I sat with who had been stripped of the vision of a better tomorrow for their children. These visions were stolen by policies enacted by populists keen on scapegoating Muslims as a means of revving up nativism and its ugly sibling, ethnic nationalism. ā Khaled A.
