Poor Black women donated to white missions at real financial sacrifice
Evidence
Black women in Memphis made a quilt “handsomely worked throughout with various designs and fancy stitches” and sent it to the northern white women as a donation to missions. At the annual meeting of black women in Tennessee, black missionary Virginia Broughton noted the resolution of her sisters to send forty dollars to the WBHMS. The contributions of black women led WBHMS leader Mary Burdette to acknowledge that such donations represented “more self-denial than double, quadruple and even ten times the amount in many [white] women’s missionary societies which we can name.” — Evelyn Brooks Higginbotham, Righteous Discontent, 451
