Political ideology and prejudice are correlated but far from perfectly aligned
Evidence
Conservatism and radicalism or liberalism do not, in these data, appear to be perfectly consistent ideologies. As an ideological continuum the conservative-liberal dimension is not closely aligned with either ethnocentrism or anti-Semitism but is in some degree aligned with them. Antagonism to minorities is more likely to be combined with conservative political views than with liberal views but the latter combination is also common and so, too, is a combination of conservatism with little antagonism to minorities. β John T. - XREF: Connects to Jostβs later ideological-matching research and to the broader debate over whether conservatism inherently entails prejudice β the data show enormous overlap, not equivalence. β connects to: Conservative politics do not predict ethnocentrism as well as fascist psychology does β Rolf Wiggershaus, The Frankfurt School: Its History,β¦, 1801
- DEEPTHINKING: Here the original Berkeley data complicate the caricature that conservatism equals prejudice: liberal-antagonism and conservative-tolerance combinations are both common, showing person-level fit with an ideological family is probabilistic, not deterministic β worth sitting with against todayβs polarized readings of the same correlation.
