Police ordered Harlem residents to leave their own neighborhood during the Powell protest
Evidence
The temperature rose along with tempers. On Saturday, more than 200 people gathered for a CORE rally after Powell’s funeral in central Harlem, then marched to the neighborhood police precinct to demand the guilty cop’s arrest. By 10:00 p.m. over 500 people had assembled around Eighth Avenue and 123rd Street, a block from the Apollo Theater and Malcolm X’s de facto headquarters, the Hotel Theresa. (Malcolm was then in Africa.) A police officer shouted for the crowd to “go home.” “We are home, baby,” someone answered. — J. Hoberman, Everything Is Now, 545
