Polemicists attacked unsupported miracle claims to deny Muhammad prophethood
Evidence
The third fruit of prophecy, in Martí’s definition, is miracles. He cites the stories (from Ibn Ishâq and the Koran) of the Meccans challenging Muhammad to perform miracles and of Muhammad’s refusal. The miracle of splitting the moon, Martí says, is not attested in the Koran. Moreover, he says, citing the Risâlat al-Kindî, such a miracle would be physically impossible, given the size of the moon; had it happened, there would have been many witnesses to attest to it. — John V.
