Plastic subjectivity is singularity, not arbitrary particularity

Evidence

Let us recall the definition of plasticity put forward in the Aesthetics: the ā€˜plastic’ is at once universal and individual (allgemein und doch individuell). While clearly unique, at the same time it expresses the universal. Unquestionably, plastic reading does engage the ā€˜Self’ of the reader, and, by the same token, is always subjective. But, taking into account the defi- nition of plasticity, we can maintain that the subjectivity required is a matter of singularity. Hence it is not just a matter of that simple and contingent particularity which always characterized the ā€˜knowing I’ and was manifestly and genuinely arbitrary. Singularity is the ostensive, open portion of subjectivity, and particularity is its occulting and concealing side: enclosed within itself, it reveals nothing but its own solipsistic being. — Catherine Malabou, The Future of Hegel, 1228
