Pinna and concha resonance determine front-behind sound localization

Evidence

Sound localization is helped mainly by the acoustic effect of the pinna and the concha. The concha acts as an acoustic resonant cavity. The com bined acoustic effects of the pinna and concha are particularly useful for determining whether a sound source is in front or behind, and to a lesser extent whether it is above or below. — David Howard, Jamie Angus, coustics and Psychoacoustics, 517
