Peter of Cluny is uniquely traceable because his exact source manuscript survives

Evidence

Peter the Venerable, for example, would always be deeply aware of those Qur’anic truths which were ‘as if extracted’ from Scripture: the patriarchs, Noe, Abraham and Lot, the Pharaoh, David and others; from the Gospel, ‘Zacharias, Elizabeth, John, son of Zacharias, Jesus or Christ, son of Mary, Gabriel speaking to Zacharias or to Mary, the rise of John, the birth of Christ from the Virgin, and some other things’. — Norman Daniel, Islam and the West, 911 (#complicates, via linked claim)

Manuel Diaz y Diaz (“La circulation des manuscrits dans le PĂ©ninsule ibĂ©rique du VIIIe au XIe siĂšcle,” Cahiers de civilisation mĂ©diĂ©vale 12 :219–41, 383–92; here 229) observes that Eulogius could be claiming to have found the text in Navarre in order to avoid inculpating Christians closer to home. The author of the biography seems originally to have lived in the region around Seville in the eighth or early ninth century (Wolf, “Christian Views,” 93ff.; Wolf, “The Earliest Latin Lives of Muhammad,” esp. 90–91). — John V. Tolan, Saracens, 1628 (#complicates, via linked claim)
