Perceived overall noise loudness tracks the N5 percentile near the maxima, not the average
Evidence
This subjective evaluation of overall loudness of a noise immission (expressed in mm line-length) can be compared with physical magnitudes of the noise immission. It turns out that in many cases the perceived overall loudness of noise immissions corresponds to the percentile loudness N5 measured by a loudness-meter. The value N5 is the loudness which is reached or exceeded in 5% of the measurement time. This means that N5 represents a loudness value close to the maxima of the loudness-time function of the noise immission. — Professor Dr.-Ing. Hugo Fastl, Professor Dr.-Ing. - DEFINE: Defines the N5 percentile loudness metric: loudness reached or exceeded in 5% of measurement time.
- XREF: Again resonates with peak-end rule; overall impression is dominated by peaks.
