Past sedimented forms become re-arrangeable singularities whose mutual spacing, not position, carries meaning

Evidence

Under the heading of ‘singularities’ – or, negatively self-identical determinatenesses – must be included all the styles and versions of spirit, everything left behind by the past, its residue, works, monuments, doctrines. These appear to be cases in the double sense of the word. They are the determinate moments that have ‘happened’, erupting into the light of day as events or, as it were, pure accidents, but also as exemplary individualities, revealing their necessity and its force. Once simplified, these determinate moments arrange themselves in new relationships with respect to one another. In relation to the other, each lets go of its independence, as they engage themselves in a relationship of reciprocal tension that creates a ‘space’ between them, a space not of confrontation but of differencewithin-continuity. What is crucial is not the extreme positions held by the confronting terms, but the distance that separates them, the totality of the space-between. — Catherine Malabou, The Future of Hegel, 1127

Categorization

  • DEFINE: Clarifies what ‘singularities’ means for Hegel here — works, monuments, doctrines as pure accidents that double as exemplary necessities — and recasts the space-between rather than terminal positions as the operative structure.
  • XREF: The ‘space-between / difference-within-continuity’ reconfiguring of residues resembles how Anidjar’s enemy concept is redefined from passive screen to agent by re-relation, and how the reader’s prior chapter-16 point about plastic sites acquires institutional articulation.
