Partition emptied Hindu jewelers from Lahore’s Krishan Nagar yet kept its craft reputation
Evidence
Ashgar worked as a jeweler and goldsmith in the lower-middle-class neighborhood of Krishan Nagar in Lahore. Developed as a colonial neighborhood in the early 1920s, Krishan Nagar had been known for its high number of Hindu jewelers and gold traders (Glover 2008, 149). After partition, however, most of the Hindu residents fled to India, and the neighborhood transitioned mainly into a residential area (renamed Islampura), although it continued to maintain a reputation for jewelry making. — Junaid Rana, Terrifying Muslims, 277
