Opening just after Barbara Rubin’s Caterpillar Changes completed its run at the Tek, Dean Fleming—Primal Panels/Charles Ross—Prisms & Lenses/Jerry Foyster—Mirrors/Steve Reich—Continuous Tape Music ran throughout March 1967. Fleming’s brightly colored, geometrically shaped Masonite paintings appeared to pop out of and slide back into white brick walls further warped by USCO associate Ross’s liquid-filled prisms, some suspended from the ceiling, and large distortive plexiglass panels. By reflecting both, Foyster’s space-expanding mirror grids further confounded the eye while Reich’s contribution, Melodica, a hypnotic, ten-minute phased loop buzzed in people’s brains. — J.
