Parents and grandparents mediate young Iranian Americans’ first experiences of Iran

Evidence

The data and resultant analyses I offer in this chapter are limited to “nonspecialist” Iranian American travelers to Iran: young people whose preparation for such recreational travel is on the whole casual and everyday. They are traveling largely under the guardianship of their parents and grandparents, and their elders’ facility with customs and codes in Iran mediates their travel in significant ways. — Neda Maghbouleh, The Limits of Whiteness, 709
