Pan-Slavism matured in the intelligentsia while Pan-Germanism mobilized mass propaganda

Evidence

Pan-Slavism, in contrast to Pan-Germanism, was formed by and permeated the whole Russian intelligentsia. Much less developed in organizational form and much less consistent in political programs, it maintained for a remarkably long time a very high level of literary sophistication and philosophical speculation. While Rozanov speculated about the mysterious differences between Jewish and Christian sex power and came to the surprising conclusion that the Jews are “united with that power, Christians being separated from it,” the leader of Austria’s Pan-Germans cheerfully discovered devices to “attract the interest of the little man by propaganda songs, post cards, Schoenerer beer mugs, walking sticks and matches. Yet eventually “Schelling and Hegel were discarded and natural science was called upon to furnish the theoretical ammunition” by the Pan-Slavs as well. — Hannah Arendt, The Origins of Totalitarianism, 603

  • XREF: The intellectual-vs-propaganda tension maps onto later questions in the reading purpose about how abstract theory becomes mobilized exclusion — connects to Gramscian hegemony and common-sense framing.
  • QUESTION: The claim that ‘Schelling and Hegel were discarded and natural science was called upon to furnish theoretical ammunition’ — worth tracing how race-thinking migrated from philosophy to pseudo-biology.
