Ottoman Tunisia mounted the largest and most generous resettlement of Moriscos
Evidence
The efforts made in Tunisia under the Uthman Dey (ruler) to provide the Moriscos with new homes were the largest-scale and the most generous of the various schemes put into effect to solve the grave problem created by the Edicts of Expulsion. The tax holidays that the Moriscos at ο¬rst enjoyed in Tunisia were part of the package of incentives that the Ottoman authorities had devised, but the local Tunisian authorities added further support and help of all kinds. Efforts were made to integrate these strangers into the structures of Tunisian life, and here Uthman could count on the enthusiastic collaboration of a wealthy Morisco merchant who had already made his way in Tunisian society: Abul-Gaith al-Qashshash (Epalza and Petit 1973, 186). β L.
