Osman was born into poverty-stricken rural Hiran in 1908 or 1909
Evidence
Osman was born in a rural settlement called Ceel Qurun near Belet Weyne in the Hiran region in 1908 or 1909. He was the only child of Abdulle Osman and Awrala Yusuf Dulaad. Osman’s parents divorced a few months after his birth, and his paternal grandmother, Hawa Herow, nursed and took care of him until she went blind four years later. Meanwhile, Abdulle Osman left for Taleeh and joined Sayyid Mohamed Abdille Hassan’s nationalist struggle against the British in Northern Somalia. — Abdi Ismail Samatar, Africa’s First Democrats, 130
