Ordinary reading is a passive absorption governed by linear syntax

Evidence

Reading can be defined in a very simple fashion, as the linear action of connecting one utterance to another. This linkage is made possible by the syntax of the utterances, which is in turn a function of the linear organization of the constitutive elements. Grammatical and logical structure are responsible for the ductility of reading. Guided by this structure, the reader can absorb the utterance without playing any role whatsoever in producing the reading’s content or form. — Catherine Malabou, The Future of Hegel, 1196
