One quarter of young Palestinian men declared willingness to die as suicide attackers
Evidence
At the latest count, fully one quarter of young Palestinian men declared a willingness to engage in this act of brutal finality. An educational counselor working in one of the West Bank refugee camps, upon inquiring of the children where they thought they would be in 20 years, was shocked at the unanimous response: “Buried,” they said. These are the children of “lost hope” who have been seen digging up the Separation Wall in sight of armed Israeli soldiers – weapons cocked, trigger fingers twitching – removing pieces of metal making up the Wall in supreme acts of carceral defiance. Where all hope of a better life is undermined, the only substitute for hopelessness is sought from the solace of an investment in the afterlife. — David Theo Goldberg, The Threat of Race, 641
