Oecumenical intent in Islamic studies does not protect against factual error.
Evidence
Sweetman in England has recently paraphrased much of Monneret de Villard’s book of 1944, but unfortunately he does not seem to have made use of later work done on the subject, and he ignores Miss d’Alverny’s. This invalidates much that he has to say on Latin treatment of Islam; he repeats a number of mistakes that had already been passed from one writer to another, and he initiates some of his own. — Norman Daniel, Islam and the West, 87

- CANDY: The irony that a scholar writing with irenic/oecumenical purpose still repeated and originated errors about Islam is a compact, tellable point.
