Odd Future mixed offensive transgressive lyrics with progressive identity inclusivity simultaneously

Evidence

While Odd Future quickly won over young music nerds (mostly “skinny white kids”), older critics wrung their hands over their Vice-like lyrics: gay slurs, misogyny, fantasies about sexual violence, and shout-outs to Hitler and Terry Richardson. Simultaneously, however, the group embodied the generational pivot toward inclusivity, with members whose identities spanned sexualities and genders. Pitchfork’s Briana Younger observed that Odd Future “challenged shallow societal representations of Blackness” while embracing disparate musical styles and identity politics within the same dialogue. — W.
