Objectivity requires a freely perceiving subject, not its erasure
Evidence
Wherever there was a predominance of the object in the positive sense, there would also be
a surplus of subject'. 22 The object must be conceived without the subject. But one could only speak of a precedence of the object in an emphatic sense where there was a subject that had the freedom of differentiated perception, where a differentiatedly perceiving subject concerned itself with the object as a matter neither of concession nor of necessity, neither obsequiously nor deceitfully. Instead, the subject mustyield to the object’ and make itself an organ capable of blending the `faculty of mimetic reaction’ with conceptual discipline. — Rolf Wiggershaus, The Frankfurt School, 637
Categorization
- DEFINE: Adorno’s ‘precedence of the object’ is clarified: it demands not the removal of the subject but a subject freed from concession and necessity who yields to the object.
- XREF: Connects to the reader’s notes on mimetic reaction and non-identity in Negative Dialectics; also to Critical Theory’s critiques of identitarian thought. — connects to: An ethnographic portrait can openly confess its own subjectivity; Being a partial subject need not reduce one to a passive object; What matters for punishment is not an event’s visibility but its objectification (+7 more)
- yield-rescued: below the book’s yield-target cutoff, included anyway for connecting to: An ethnographic portrait can openly confess its own subjectivity; Being a partial subject need not reduce one to a passive object; What matters for punishment is not an event’s visibility but its objectification (+7 more)
