Objective measures based on hearing models substitute for tedious listening tests of distortion.
Evidence
There are many kinds of technical measures for distortion in audio and speech systems. Especially if the distortion mechanism is sufficiently complex, characterizing how annoying it is perceptually is very difficult. The current methods used to measure non-linear distortions are reviewed by Klippel (2006). Subjective listening tests are then the best way to evaluate the overall quality or its specific attributes. Since this may be tedious, objective measures based on models of auditory perception have been developed. β Ville Pulkki, Matti Karjalainen, Communication Acoustics- Anβ¦, 517
