North Beach Beat scene drew sustained police pressure and media harassment
Evidence
North Beach had been under fire for the better part of two years. In May 1958, The San Francisco Examiner ran a three-part exposé of the Beat Generation’s “headquarters” and the sinister antics occurring “far out in the faceless jungle of nothingness.” Two lurid incidents—a drunken suicide and a rape/murder—triggered police occupation that summer. Much of the harassment was racial, and Kaufman was arrested twice. — J. Hoberman, Everything Is Now, 154
