Nonconformist reformers subordinate self-preservation to their moral principles
Evidence
Thomas More, who was beheaded for refusing to compromise his resolute religious convictions, is a notable example from history. Social reformers often endure untold hardships for unyielding adherence to ideological and moral principles. Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King, and Nelson Mandela are but a few reformers who sacrificed their well-being and even their lives for their principles. Moral heroism is not confined to phenomenal reformers, however. In later analyses, we cite examples of extraordinary moral courage by common individuals and address the psychosocial factors that motivated them. — Albert Bandura, Moral Disengagement, 227
